Tanker Endorsement

A tanker endorsement (N endorsement) is added to a CDL and authorizes drivers to operate tank vehicles transporting liquids or gases. Any vehicle with a tank capacity over 119 gallons that is used to transport liquids or gases requires this endorsement.

In Depth

Tank vehicles have unique handling characteristics. Liquid surge in partially filled tanks shifts weight dynamically during braking and turning, significantly changing vehicle stability. Drivers with tanker endorsements receive training on managing surge, roll-over risks, and emergency procedures specific to tanker operations.

The tanker endorsement requires passing a written knowledge test only — no separate skills test beyond the standard CDL. Combining a tanker endorsement with HazMat creates an X endorsement, which is required for most fuel tanker and chemical hauling work.

Tanker drivers are typically among the highest-paid CDL holders due to the specialized skills and liability. Fuel tanker drivers operating in major metro areas often earn $70,000–$100,000/year as company drivers.

Usage Example

Example: 'My CDL-A with N and H endorsements lets me haul fuel tankers. The tanker company pays $0.70/mile plus a safety bonus.'
