TONU (Truck Order Not Used)

TONU is a fee paid to a carrier when a shipper cancels or fails to tender freight after a truck has been dispatched and arrives at the pickup location. It compensates the driver for time and fuel wasted.

In Depth

TONU rates are negotiated in the rate confirmation and typically range from $150–$400 depending on the market and distance traveled. Many shippers resist paying TONU, but it is an important protection for carriers.

To protect yourself, always confirm the TONU clause in writing on the rate confirmation before dispatching. Document arrival time with a photo of the dock or timestamp.

Usage Example

Example: 'The shipper cancelled after I was already at the door. I invoiced for the $250 TONU listed in the rate con.'
