Routes, regulations, and fuel strategy for Arizona — current rate $0.260/gallon
Arizona is a major corridor state for freight moving between Southern California and the rest of the country. I-10 is the primary artery, running from the California border at Blythe through Phoenix and Tucson before exiting into New Mexico at El Paso. I-40 cuts across the northern half of the state, following the old Route 66 alignment through Kingman, Flagstaff, and Winslow — this route serves freight moving from Los Angeles to Albuquerque and points east. I-17 connects Phoenix to Flagstaff and is the main north-south link between the Valley and the I-40 corridor, though it climbs to nearly 7,000 feet through the Mogollon Rim and can see winter closures from November through March.
Arizona's IFTA rate of $0.260 per gallon is among the lower rates in the western US. California's $0.679 rate makes it extremely profitable to fill your tanks completely before crossing the California border at Ehrenberg on I-10 or Needles on I-40. Nevada at $0.285 and Utah at $0.315 are also higher than Arizona, so westbound drivers should top off before leaving the state.
Standard weight limits are 80,000 lbs on interstates. Arizona is part of the Western States Size and Weight Consortium for oversize/overweight permitting. The state allows a higher gross weight of up to 105,500 lbs on certain highways with a special permit — verify current rules with ADOT before hauling oversized equipment.
Arizona runs agricultural inspection stations at all ports of entry into the state, not just weigh stations — these check for invasive species, and commercial vehicles must stop regardless of weight. The Ehrenberg port on I-10 is one of the busiest in the country. Summer heat between June and September regularly pushes tire blowouts and brake fade on downhill grades near Kingman on I-40. For IFTA compliance, keep records of fuel purchased at the Flying J and Pilot locations in Ehrenberg and Tonopah since those are common high-volume fueling points at or near state borders.
