Routes, regulations, and fuel strategy for Florida — current rate $0.349/gallon
Florida is a freight terminus state — nearly all commercial traffic either originates or ends here, with very little pure through-hauling since the state is a peninsula with only Georgia and Alabama as land borders. I-95 runs the entire Atlantic coast from Jacksonville to Miami. I-75 runs from the Georgia border through Tampa and Naples, and together with Alligator Alley (I-75 through the Everglades) connects the west coast to the east. I-10 runs east-west across the Panhandle connecting Pensacola to Jacksonville. The Jacksonville area is Florida's largest distribution hub, while Miami-Dade handles enormous port freight from PortMiami, one of the largest cruise and cargo ports in the Southeast.
Florida's IFTA rate of $0.349 per gallon is moderately high. Georgia at $0.324 and Alabama at $0.290 are cheaper, so northbound loads should ideally get their last Florida fuel stop early in the trip rather than waiting for the last moment before the Georgia border where pump prices may be inflated near major interchanges.
Standard weight limits are 80,000 lbs on interstates. Florida allows a unique single-trip permit for 100,000 lbs on certain state roads under the Florida Oversize/Overweight Permit program. Citrus, sugarcane, and phosphate haulers operating on county roads in central Florida often deal with seasonal agricultural weight restriction postings after heavy rain that can catch out-of-state drivers off guard.
Florida enforces commercial vehicle compliance at permanent weigh stations on I-10 near Pensacola and Live Oak, I-75 near Wildwood and Naples, and I-95 near Jacksonville. Summer thunderstorms from June through September create dangerous driving conditions daily, with frequent lightning, flooding, and reduced visibility. For IFTA compliance, Florida is a base state for many Southeast regional carriers — its HSMV handles IFTA registration cleanly and the online filing portal is straightforward, but be aware that fuel purchased in Florida at $0.349 used to run Georgia and Alabama miles will generate a net refund at filing time.
