Kentucky punches far above its weight in the trucking industry. The state is a national logistics hub anchored by the UPS Worldport at Louisville International Airport — the largest automated package sorting facility in the world — and Amazon's Prime Air hub at the same airport. I-71 connects Louisville to Cincinnati. I-75 runs north-south through Lexington and connects Knoxville to Cincinnati through the state. I-64 runs east-west from St. Louis to Huntington, WV, passing through Louisville. I-65 is the primary north-south artery from Nashville through Louisville to Indianapolis. I-24 serves western Kentucky connecting Nashville to Paducah.

Kentucky's IFTA rate structure has two components: a $0.256 base rate plus a $0.044 surcharge, for an effective rate of $0.300 per gallon. This surcharge must be reported separately on your IFTA return — if your base state IFTA form doesn't have a specific Kentucky surcharge line, you need to add it. Tennessee at $0.210 and Indiana at $0.530 flank I-65 — fuel in Tennessee before crossing north into Kentucky to avoid the higher effective rate versus Tennessee, but definitely top off in Kentucky before Indiana.

Standard weight limits are 80,000 lbs on interstates. Kentucky has a significant permit load industry for coal and mining equipment in eastern Kentucky, where mountain roads require special routing. The Mountain Parkway through the Daniel Boone National Forest area has weight restrictions on several bridges.

The Brent Spence Bridge over the Ohio River on I-75/I-71 between Cincinnati and Covington is one of the most critical and congested freight chokepoints in the Midwest. Plan for delays here during peak hours. Weigh stations on I-75 near Georgetown, I-65 near Elizabethtown, and I-64 near Frankfort are active. For IFTA compliance, always report Kentucky's surcharge as a separate line item — failure to do so is one of the most common Kentucky IFTA audit triggers.
