Maryland is a dense Mid-Atlantic corridor state with some of the most complex truck routing in the eastern US. The Baltimore metropolitan area sits at the nexus of I-95 (the main Northeast Corridor), I-70 (running west to Hagerstown and Pennsylvania), and I-83 (running north to York, PA). The Port of Baltimore handles significant automobile imports, coal exports, and general cargo. The I-95 corridor through the Fort McHenry Tunnel downtown and the I-695 Baltimore Beltway are among the most congested freight routes on the East Coast.

Maryland's IFTA rate of $0.369 per gallon is moderately high. Delaware at $0.220 to the northeast is considerably cheaper — if your route takes you through Delaware before Maryland, that is a strategic fueling opportunity. Virginia at $0.272 to the south and West Virginia at $0.3575 to the west are both cheaper options. Pennsylvania at $0.746 to the north is dramatically higher, making Maryland a preferred fuel stop for drivers heading north into Pennsylvania.

The I-495/I-95 interchange near College Park and the I-270 spur to I-495 generate severe congestion that affects freight schedules during DC-area rush hours. Commercial vehicles are prohibited from I-270 during certain peak periods. Height restrictions at the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (13 feet 6 inches) divert tall loads to alternate routes. I-95 through the Fort McHenry Tunnel is 14 feet 6 inches.
