Routes, regulations, and fuel strategy for Maine — current rate $0.312/gallon
Maine is the northernmost state in the Northeast and borders Canada at multiple points — it shares more border with Canada than any other state. I-95 (the Maine Turnpike) runs from the New Hampshire border north through Portland, Augusta, and Bangor before becoming a free highway and continuing to Houlton at the New Brunswick border. I-295 provides a coastal alternative through Brunswick and Bath. The timber, paper, potato, blueberry, and seafood industries generate most of Maine's freight volume. Presque Isle in Aroostook County is one of the most isolated major agricultural areas in the country, generating significant potato and grain freight.
Maine's IFTA rate of $0.312 per gallon is moderate for the Northeast. New Hampshire at $0.222 to the southwest is notably cheaper. If your route brings you through New Hampshire before entering Maine, fill up in NH before crossing — a full tank at $0.222 versus $0.312 saves $13.50 per 150-gallon fill. Massachusetts at $0.240 is also cheaper. The only nearby jurisdiction cheaper than Maine for fuel is New Hampshire.
Standard weight limits are 80,000 lbs on federal interstates, but Maine has a significant network of posted roads — secondary highways where frost damage restrictions reduce allowable weights from approximately February through May. The Maine DOT posts these restriction dates, and violations carry substantial fines. Logging trucks operating on private roads under special permit have different rules.
The Maine Turnpike has toll plazas at several points and uses E-ZPass. Weigh stations are located at Gray near Portland and at Gardiner. Winter conditions in Maine are severe — chains or adequate snow equipment are required during storm periods, and I-95 closures north of Bangor happen several times per winter. For IFTA compliance, note that significant Maine mileage may be on non-interstate routes through the interior timber country — ensure those miles are captured in your logs even when GPS coverage is limited.
