North Carolina is the Southeast's fastest-growing logistics state, driven by population growth in the Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham metro areas and a booming manufacturing sector that includes pharmaceuticals, electronics, automotive parts, and food processing. I-85 runs northeast from Gastonia through Charlotte, Greensboro, and Durham before crossing into Virginia — it is the primary freight corridor linking Atlanta to the Mid-Atlantic states. I-40 runs east-west from Knoxville, Tennessee through Asheville, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and Raleigh to Wilmington on the coast. I-95 runs up the eastern coastal plain through Fayetteville connecting Florida to the Northeast. The Charlotte Douglas International Airport has a growing air cargo operation, and the Port of Wilmington handles growing container volumes.

North Carolina's IFTA rate of $0.365 per gallon is among the higher rates in the Southeast. Virginia at $0.272 to the north is considerably cheaper. Tennessee at $0.210 to the west is significantly cheaper. South Carolina at $0.220 to the south is dramatically cheaper. Drivers on I-85 heading south from Virginia should plan fuel stops once they clear NC into South Carolina. Drivers on I-40 from Tennessee should fill up before entering NC through Asheville.

Standard weight limits are 80,000 lbs on interstates. I-40 through the western mountains near Asheville runs over several steep grades and the Pigeon River Gorge section — brake check stations and runaway truck ramps are located on the descent from the Tennessee border. Height restrictions on several older structures in the mountains and on certain US highway routes in eastern NC require advance routing research.

Weigh stations on I-85 near Butner and near the South Carolina border, and on I-95 near Lumberton, are active. For IFTA compliance, North Carolina's NCDOT DMV handles IFTA filings — with a moderately high rate, carriers who fuel in cheaper neighboring states like Virginia or South Carolina while running significant NC miles will have a net tax liability that must be accurately reported.
