Routes, regulations, and fuel strategy for New Hampshire — current rate $0.222/gallon
New Hampshire is a small but strategically positioned state in the Northeast, with the lowest diesel tax rate in New England at $0.222 per gallon. I-93 runs north-south from the Massachusetts border through Manchester, Concord, and on to the White Mountains before connecting to I-91 in Vermont near St. Johnsbury. I-89 runs northwest from Concord through Hanover to Vermont. I-95 runs just 16 miles through the southeastern corner of the state — the shortest stretch of any state on the I-95 corridor — connecting Seabrook to Maine through Portsmouth.
New Hampshire's low rate compared to all surrounding states makes it the best fueling location in New England. Massachusetts at $0.240, Maine at $0.312, Vermont at $0.320, and Connecticut at $0.402 are all more expensive. Carriers running New England routes should prioritize NH fuel stops whenever possible. A 150-gallon fill in NH versus Connecticut saves $27 per stop — over the course of a month of Northeast runs, that adds up meaningfully.
Standard weight limits are 80,000 lbs on interstates. New Hampshire's secondary road network suffers from severe frost damage, and spring weight restrictions on many town and state roads run from mid-February through late April. The White Mountains region — including I-93 through Franconia Notch State Park — has a section called the Franconia Notch Parkway that restricts commercial vehicles to one lane each direction with width limits of 8 feet 8 inches. Trucks over 80,000 lbs cannot use the Franconia Notch section at all and must detour via I-91 in Vermont.
The F.E. Everett Turnpike (I-293 and part of I-93) has tolls for commercial vehicles. Weigh stations are located on I-93 near Salem and I-95 near Hampton. For IFTA compliance, New Hampshire's Revenue Administration processes filings efficiently — the state's low rate means accurate tracking of NH-purchased fuel results in a meaningful refund when miles are run in higher-rate surrounding states.
