Routes, regulations, and fuel strategy for Nevada — current rate $0.285/gallon
Nevada is primarily a corridor and distribution state, with Las Vegas and the Reno-Sparks area as the two main freight centers. I-80 runs east-west through northern Nevada, connecting Reno to Salt Lake City — this is a primary transcontinental freight route. I-15 runs north-south from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City and is the main Los Angeles-to-Las Vegas freight corridor, handling enormous volumes of retail, hospitality supply chain, and construction materials. US-93 and US-95 handle north-south freight through the rural center of the state. The Tahoe Reno Industrial Center east of Reno has become one of the largest industrial parks in the western US, housing Tesla's Gigafactory and numerous distribution centers that have dramatically increased Nevada's freight volumes in the past decade.
Nevada's IFTA rate of $0.285 per gallon is moderately low for the West. California at $0.679 to the west is dramatically more expensive. Utah at $0.315 to the east is slightly higher. Arizona at $0.260 to the southeast is slightly cheaper. Idaho at $0.320 to the north is slightly higher. Nevada is consistently one of the better fuel-stop states for carriers crossing the West — fill up in Nevada before entering California in any direction.
Standard weight limits are 80,000 lbs on interstates. Nevada is a permissive state for oversize loads — it participates in the Western States Size and Weight Consortium and issues permits for up to 129,000 lbs on certain routes. This makes Nevada a preferred routing option for heavy equipment and construction machinery moves in the western US.
Weigh stations on I-80 at Lovelock and at the California border near Verdi are active. The I-15 inspection station at the Utah border near Mesquite is consistently staffed. Summer heat in Nevada exceeds 110°F in the Mojave Desert along I-15 south of Las Vegas — tire blowouts and brake overheating on the descent from Boulder City are common. For IFTA compliance, Nevada's DMV handles IFTA cleanly with an online portal, and the state's moderate rate rarely creates significant reconciliation issues on quarterly returns.
