Routes, regulations, and fuel strategy for Utah — current rate $0.315/gallon
Utah is the logistics hub of the Intermountain West, with Salt Lake City sitting at the intersection of I-15 (running north-south from Montana to Arizona) and I-80 (running east-west from San Francisco to New York). The Amazon, Walmart, and major retailer distribution centers along I-15 in Utah County have made the Salt Lake Valley one of the fastest-growing logistics regions in the western US. I-70 through southeastern Utah is one of the most isolated and visually dramatic sections of interstate highway in the country — running through canyon country with no services for over 100 miles in some stretches. I-84 connects the Salt Lake area to the Boise and Portland corridors to the northwest.
Utah's IFTA rate of $0.315 per gallon is moderate for the western US. Nevada at $0.285 to the west is somewhat cheaper. Wyoming at $0.240 to the north is notably cheaper. Colorado at $0.205 to the east is significantly cheaper for westbound I-70 drivers. Idaho at $0.320 is slightly higher. Arizona at $0.260 to the south is cheaper. For eastbound I-70 drivers heading into Colorado, Utah is not a particularly advantageous fueling state relative to Colorado. For westbound drivers, top off in Utah before heading into Nevada.
Utah has aggressive commercial vehicle weight enforcement. The state uses WIM sensors on I-15 and I-80 to pre-screen vehicles, and fixed stations at key border points are consistently staffed. The Cottonwood Canyon and Parleys Canyon sections of I-80 near Salt Lake City have mandatory chain laws during winter storms.
Standard weight limits are 80,000 lbs. The I-70 corridor through San Rafael Swell and the Book Cliffs has limited services — drivers should not attempt that stretch with less than a three-quarter tank. For IFTA compliance, Utah's Tax Commission handles IFTA filings through the Taxpayer Access Point (TAP) portal — the filing system is straightforward and the moderate rate rarely creates complex reconciliation issues.
