Routes, regulations, and fuel strategy for Wyoming — current rate $0.240/gallon
Wyoming is a critical throughput state on I-80 and one of the most challenging states for winter commercial vehicle operations in the country. I-80 runs east-west through the southern portion of the state from Nebraska through Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins, Rock Springs, and Evanston to the Utah border — it reaches Laramie at 7,165 feet elevation and crosses the Great Divide Basin at over 6,700 feet. I-25 runs north-south from Colorado through Cheyenne to Casper and Sheridan, connecting the Front Range with Billings and I-90 in Montana. I-90 crosses the northeastern corner through Gillette and Buffalo. The Powder River Basin coal industry generates enormous rail and truck freight in the northeast, and the Pinedale Anticline natural gas field in the Green River Basin generates oilfield service freight in the southwest.
Wyoming's IFTA rate of $0.240 per gallon is among the lower rates in the western United States. Utah at $0.315 to the southwest is higher. Colorado at $0.205 to the south is cheaper. Idaho at $0.320 to the northwest is higher. Montana at $0.2775 to the north is slightly higher. Nebraska at $0.290 to the east is also higher. Fill up in Wyoming before heading into Utah or Idaho.
I-80 through Wyoming is notorious for closures. The Elk Mountain corridor between Laramie and Rawlins — one of the windiest sections of interstate in the country — can see wind gusts exceeding 60 mph that close the road to high-profile vehicles multiple times per month in winter. WYDOT operates a 24-hour traveler information line (511) and posts road condition updates, but closures can happen within minutes of a weather change. Chains are required on I-80 and I-25 during winter storm events.
Standard weight limits are 80,000 lbs. Wyoming has liberal oversize permitting for oil and gas equipment and wind turbine components moving through the state. For IFTA compliance, Wyoming's DOT handles filings — the combination of long-haul I-80 miles and potential rerouting due to closures means your IFTA mileage for Wyoming quarters can vary significantly between Q2 summer and Q4 winter. Document any routing deviations due to road closures in case of audit inquiry.
